Places to Eat
There are MANY great places to eat in the Galena area. These are just a few:
There are two restaurants in the Territory - Highlands, at the General Golf Course as you come in off of Hwy 20 and Woodlands, located at Eagle Ridge Resort. Note that during the winter months until Memorial day, Highlands serves a limited menu (pizza, pretzels, wings) while the full menu is available at Woodlands.
The next closest is Frank O'Dowds inside the Irish Cottage hotel on Hwy 20. Frank's serves classic Irish dishes like corned beef, shepherd pie, bangers and mash, and of course Guinness. They often have live music on the weekends. Happy Joes pizza is right next door for dine-in or carry out.
MOST DOWNTOWN RESTAURANTS you'll want to make reservations, especially for a group on a weekend.
If you're downtown, classic Italian favorites are Vinnie Vanucchi's or Fried Green Tomatoes. Or check out the newest Italian place: Cucina Bella.
For a classic steak house experience, try The Log Cabin. Be sure to try the Saganaki (flaming cheese). Opah!
The sushi and teriyaki at Little Tokyo are great!
Looking for a great burger and fun/casual atmosphere, then try Dirty Gurts. Check out the "Shut the Front Door" burger - a bacon cheeseburger but with GLAZED DOUGHNUTS instead of the traditional bun.
Celebrating a special event? Consider fine dining at Goldmoor Inn. While this restaurant is not downtown, it's worth the trip (towards Chestnut Ski Resort, about 6 miles from downtown) for the seasonal menu and views of the Mississippi river. Reservations needed for this elegant dining option.
Want something a little different? Check out Fritz & Frites. This upscale bistro serves both traditional German (think Wiener schnitzel) and French (think Ratatouille) cuisine in a cozy setting. Dinner only. Or try Caliza Mediterranean Cuisine. (Caution - lots of stairs to this 2nd floor restaurant)
Looking for some pizza to bring back to the house? We suggest Cannovas or Happy Joes. Either way, order early because it can be several hours if you wait to call at dinner time.
Breakfast or Lunch: If you're downtown Big Bills, Embe and Bread and Vine are some of our favorites. We also love Otto's. It is located on the opposite side of the river, so plan for a quite a walk or drive over the bridge. Reservations are recommended, especially on the weekend. If you go, you MUST try the "house made Pop Tart" flavor of the day! From the house, you might consider Lola's Deli just down the road in Elizabeth.
Need a little Coffee pick-me-up? Our favorites are Galena Roasters and Wired Rabbit.
Best Bar for after hours? You'll find a fun atmosphere, wide variety of drinks and live music (most days) at Miss Kitty's Grape Escape.
